Canton coach John Manners knows he has had a charmed life as coach of the Warriors girls golf team. In the first four years of the team’s existence, the Warriors won two Southern Connecticut Girls Golf League championships and qualified for the CIAC tournament three times.
It will be a more difficult season this year in terms of team achievements. Canton, which had a school record 18 wins a year ago, graduated four players and three starters.
Two-time All-SCGGL selection Nikki Liucci returns along with senior Megan Roux, who was a All-SCGGL second team pick. Both have the potential to qualify for the state tournament as individual players. But the remaining five players on the team are first-year players and three are freshmen.
“It’s definitely a building year,” Manners said. Junior Meghan Davis and freshmen Kendall McCauley, Olivia Pelehach, Dana Nelson and Zoe Van Kirk make up the remainder of the team.
BOYS GOLF: A year ago, Canton (12-3-1, 8-2-1 NCCC) had its best-ever finish in the CIAC Division II tournament by finishing second. Brad Parliaman, Ryan Allen and Blaine Houlihan each were named to the All-NCCC squad. Allen and Houlihan earned All-State honors during their careers. All three have graduated along with starters Jon Phelps and James Solomon.
It will be a different team this spring, looking to make its own mark under coach Bill Phelps. Senior David Roux returns along with junior Mark Amarosio and seniors Sam Crowe, Michael Pepin and Derek Soifer
