Avon earns berth in Section II title game

UNCASVILLE, July 25 – Evan Deckers and Max Kritikos each had home runs and the Avon Major Division baseball All-Star team (ages 11-12) had 13 hits in a 9-7 win over Waterford South on Monday night.

The win puts Avon (10-2, 3-2 Section II) into the Section II championship game against undefeated Glastonbury Americans (5-0) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Section II champion will play a best-of-3 series for the state championship and a berth in the Eastern Regionals in Bristol.

Avon took a 6-1 lead after three innings and added two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. Deckers had two hits, including a double while Kritikos also had a single. Jack Prete was 2-for-4 with a double and single. On the mound, Justin Olson went 4 2/3 innings for Avon , striking out eight and giving up four hits and two runs. Andrew Marshall and Sam Leopold finished up in relief.

Avon lost to Glastonbury American on Sunday, 6-5 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Avon was the only team not to lose to Glastonbury by the 10-run mercy rule.
