HARWINTON, July 28 – Avon’s Minor Division baseball All-Star team (ages 10-11) will get an opportunity to play for a Little League state championship. With a 10-8 victory over Wethersfield in the Section II championship game, Avon earned a spot in the best-of-3 finals against two-time defending champion Fairfield American. Game 1 is Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bob Duval Field in Haddam.

Game 2 is Monday night at 5:30 p.m. and game 3, if necessary, will be Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 5:30 p.m. in Haddam.

Avon (7-1, 5-1 Section II) beat Wethersfield 1-0 in the first game of the sectional tournament before beating Norwich, 12-2 in four innings and East Lyme, 5-1. After a one-run loss to Guilford, 2-1, Avon rebounded with a 9-6 win over South Windsor.

Two other Avon teams have played for a Little League state title. The 9-10 All-Stars dropped game 3 of the championship series to Fairfield in 2001 and 9-10 All-Stars were swept in two games by Annex of New Haven in 2007.
