AVON, June 4– The Avon High boys golf team won its second straight NCCC Tournament championship sparked by Alex Stekler, who finished second with a 74, two strokes behind tournament champion Mike Thibodeau of Ellington. Avon slipped past Coventry by two strokes, 311-313 and nine strokes ahead of league champion Ellington (320). The Falcons (12-4, 10-2 NCCC) finished third in the regular season behind Ellington (18-0, 12-0 NCCC) and Coventry (18-1, 11-1).
At the CIAC Division II tournament, Avon stumbled with a score of 338, good enough for 13th place. Ryan Karbowicz was the only Falcon to break 80 with a 75 at Timberlin Golf Club in Kensington. Stekler shot an 85 while Matt Bergman shot an 87. Justin Hufsmith and Peter Levine each shot a 91. It was the lowest finish in the state tournament since tying for 14th place in 2006.
