Kennedy earns spot in 50 meter final

OMAHA, Neb., July 1 – Avon’s Madison Kennedy has one more opportunity to earn a spot in the U.S. Olympic swim team. Kennedy swam a personal best 24.93 seconds in the 50 freestyle in the preliminary round on Sunday afternoon and then nearly matched that with a 24.96 in the semifinals Sunday night at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials to earn a spot in the finals.

The top two swimmers in the 50 free will earn spots on the U.S. team. You can watch the finals live on NBC (Channel 30 in Connecticut) on Monday night between 8 and 9 p.m.

Kennedy’s time has her seeded fourth in the eight-woman race. The top seed is Jessica Hardy (24.56), who won the 100 freestyle at the trials on Saturday night only 0.89 of a second ahead of Kennedy, who finished eighth. Christine Magnuson (24.72) grabbed the No. 2 seed while 45-year-old Dara Torres, looking to compete in her sixth Olympic games, was the third seed (24.80).

On Saturday night in the 100 meter final, Kennedy led the field after 50 meters but couldn’t hold the lead. The top six swimmers in that race earned a spot on the field. Still, Kennedy’s time of 54.83 seconds was the second fastest performance in the 100 freestyle in her career. Her personal best came in the 100 free semifinals on Friday.
