STAMFORD, March 2 – New Canaan (24-1) received goals from Olivia Hompe and Catherine Granito and limited West Hartford to just 18 shots on goal to win its third state title in four years with a 2-0 victory. Granito had a goal and an assist while New Canaan goalie Natalie DeNey made 18 saves for her second shutout of the state tournament. Hompe was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
New Canaan downs Simsbury in semifinals
DARIEN, Feb. 27 — Olivia Hompe had two goals and two assists as New Canaan scored three goals in six minutes to break open a tight contest and lift the Rams into the state final with a 5-1 win over Simsbury at Darien Ice Rink. Madzie Carroll had one goal and three assists while freshman Catherine Granito had two goals and an assist.
New Canaan took a 2-0 lead in the first period and held that lead into the third period before Simsbury closed the gap with a goal from Laura Yablecki. Simsbury got a power play opportunity but New Canaan goalie Natalie DeNey (12 saves) was solid. New Canaan took control with about 9:03 remaining as Carroll fed Granito on a breakaway goal that gave the Rams a 3-1 lead. Four minutes later, Hompe scored and Carroll scored again with 3:26 remaining.
New Canaan, Simsbury, West Hartford win in quarters
NEW CANAAN, Feb. 25 — Olivia Hompe, Madzie Carroll and Corbett Ripley each had two goals and two assists as New Canaan (22-1) rolled to a 7-0 win over Greenwich (11-11) in the state girls hockey quarterfinals. … Maggie Grigley had two goals and her sister Katie had one goal as Simsbury (16-5-1) blanked Hamden (13-8), 5-0. Simsbury goalie MacKenzie Dubois made 14 saves to earn the win. … Defending state champion West Hartford (18-3) blanked Guilford (10-9), 5-0 to earn a spot in the semifinals. Emily Corrales had three goals while Bailey Amenabar added two goals for the co-op squad from Hall and Conard High.
