Another Sun player is out for the year with an injury

CT Sun logoUh oh. This isn’t going as planned.

The Connecticut Sun announced that a second player will miss the entire 2013 season with an injury. Forward Danielle McCray will miss the season after tearing her Achilles tendon. On April 4, All-Star forward Ashja Jones said she would miss the season to recover from nagging injuries.

McCray, a rugged and an athletic guard, was a valuable player off the bench for the Sun last summer with a dependable three-point shot. She played in 28 games and averaged 4.8 points and 2.0 rebounds a game and 20 3-point shots.

McCray will need surgery to repair her tendon and will undergo between five and six months of rehabilitation. “It is very disappointing that Danielle has suffered another significant injury that will require surgery,” Sun coach Anne Donovan said. “She was having a great season in Italy.”

McCray averaged 12.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in FIBA Euroleague play for Familia Schio of Italy before getting hurt. McCray also missed the 2010 WNBA season recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered during her senior year at Kansas.

Now, the Sun, who open training camp on May 5, need to replace a starter (Jones) and a key bench player.

Connecticut finished first in the Eastern Conference a year ago with a 25-9 record and went to the WNBA’s Eastern Conference finals before getting walloped in the decisive game 3 on its home floor by eventual league champion Indiana.

The Sun open training camp on May 5 and kick off their preseason schedule against New York on May 11. Connecticut opens its 11th season in the state at the Mohegan Sun Arena on May 25 against New York.
