Phoenix’s DeWanna Bonner had a game and season-high 21 points as the Mercury snapped a five-game losing streak Sunday night with a 72-63 win over the Connecticut Sun before a sellout crowd of 13,481 in Phoenix.

Thomas Sosa cranked a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning, leading the Chesapeake Baysox to a 5-4 victory against the Hartford Yard Goats in the rubber game on Sunday afternoon at Prince George’s Stadium. Hartford had leads of 1-0, 3-1 and 4-3, but the Baysox used a late comeback to beat the Yard Goats bullpen for a second straight game. Hartford starter Jackson Cox was impressive again over six innings, allowing just one run on four hits and adding to his MiLB lead in strikeouts with six. Jose Torres had three hits, including a double, an RBI, and a run scored, and Mike Antico had two hits and broke a tie with an RBI single in the eighth inning. Dyan Jorge had a two-run single that gave Hartford the lead in the sixth inning.

Hartford’s Stu Flesland III pitched five no-hit innings and Jose Torres and Roc Riggio homered, but it was not enough to stop the Chesapeake Baysox 4-3 win over the Hartford Yard Goats in Eastern League action at Prince George’s Stadium. The Baysox spoiled Flesland III’s outing, scoring a run in the seventh and three in the eighth for only their fourth win in 43 games, when trailing after the seventh inning. Flesland III dominated Chesapeake through five innings, permitting only two base runners on a hit batsman and a walk. He struck out four. It was his longest outing of the season. Meanwhile, Hartford took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Jose Torres over the left field wall. Riggio delivered what was seemingly a huge insurance run in the eighth inning with a two-out home run over the wall in center field to make it 3-1. It was his 13th homer of the campaign.

Jack Mahoney improved to 6-1 and tossed six solid innings, Andy Perez had a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh inning while Zach Kokoska and Jack O’Dowd homered as the Yard Goats defeated the Chesapeake Baysox 7-3 Friday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland. Mahoney, who entered the day with the second-best ERA (1.98) of any Yard Goats pitcher ever over 10 starts, worked six innings, allowed a pair of runs and recorded four strikeouts. The Yard Goats trailed 2-1 in the seventh inning before rallying to score three runs and open their two-city nine-game road trip with a victory. Andy Perez, who leads the Eastern League in hits, had three hits, including a double, and one run scored.

Of note: Burlington (13-1) extended their lead in the Tri-State League standings over second place Candlewood (11-3) with another victory at Dunkin’ Park, home of the Hartford Yard Goats, the Double A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. It was the fourth straight year that Burlington played games in Hartford. Burlington had 16 hits and hit three home runs. George Zaruba hit two home runs while Justin McCullough hit a grand slam. Tim Krol had four hits for the Hunters.

Aaliyah Edwards had 21 points and eight rebounds while Brittney Griner had 20 points and two blocks as the Connecticut Sun snapped a two-game losing streak with a 90-87 victory before a sellout crowd of 8,917 Tuesday morning at the Mohegan Sun Arena. It was the final game between the two teams before the Sun move to Houston next summer. The annual contest with the 11 a.m. start was played before a vocal crowd with plenty of youngsters on camp day. Olivia Nelson Ododa scored 16 points for the Sun (6-18) while Lelia Lacan added 14 points.

Portland (10-14) trailed by 15 points, 70-55, early in the fourth quarter but rallied to make it a game down the stretch. A 14-2 run that included a 13-0 stretch cut the Sun lead to three. Portland sliced the lead to two, 84-83 with 2:15 left before Edwards hit a jumper in the lane. Edwards had 13 of Connecticut’s 32 points in the first quarter. Carla Leite had 18 points to lead the expansion Fire, who had won their first two games against Connecticut, while teammate Emily Engstler scored 15.
