Avon takes third at Division II championship meet

Golf ballHEBRON, June 10 – The Avon High boys golf team set a school record for the lowest team score in a state tournament – 308. But it wasn’t enough as Madison’s Daniel Hand shot a 299 to win its second straight CIAC Division II golf championship Monday at Tallwood Country Club. North Haven’s sophomore Ramsey Kong set the pace with a five-under-par 67. 

The Falcons finished third for the second time in three seasons, nipping Darien by one stroke. New Canaan was two strokes ahead to the Falcons to capture the runnerup trophy.

Ryan Karbowicz led Avon with a two-over-par 74 while Alex Stekler had a 75. Marcus Husted shot a 78 while Justin Hufsmith had an 81 and Matt Bergman had an 89. The meet was postponed one week after rain last Monday.

The previous low 18-hole score for the Falcons was a 312 when they finished second in Division II in 2010.
