Avon, Canton still in running for the NCCC championship in boys golf

Golf ballCOVENTRY, June 3 – Avon and Canton are among the four teams who are in the running for the NCCC championship in boys golf when the league holds their annual NCCC Invitational Wednesday at Twin Hills Country Club in Coventry.

Suffield (13-1, 12-1 NCCC) is looking to win its second straight NCCC championship but Avon (13-3, 11-2 NCCC), Canton (12-3, 11-2 NCCC) and Granby (12-3, 11-2 NCCC) are right there in contention. Teams earn one point for each dual meet victory and a half-point for every team they beat at the league tournament.

The teams will be playing 18 holes in the tournament. A year ago, Suffield shot a 303 to win the tournament and claimed the league title when Coventry faded to fourth place at the tournament. Avon was second in the NCCC Tournament with a 309 with Canton taking a strong third with 311.

Avon has won three of the last four NCCC Tournaments but they were a half-point behind Coventry in 2013 and a half-point behind Suffield in 2011 for the league championship.

It is Avon’s final appearance in the NCCC. They will play in the Central Connecticut Conference next spring.
