Pairings announced for 2013 American Legion baseball tournament

Baseball ImageThe 2013 American Legion baseball state tournament begins on Saturday, July 20 with 40 teams from across the state participating, including newly-crowned Zone 1 champion Avon. The Legion is trying a new state tournament format this year.

The better your regular season record was the fewer games a team has to play in the single-elimination phase of the tournament. The eight Zone champions will have to win just one game to move on to the four-team, double elimination portion of the Northern Sectional tournament in Torrington or the Southern Sectional tournament in Stamford.

Winners of the two sectional tournaments will play a best-of-3 championship series for the state championship.

Avon (20-4) will play on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Avon Old Farms. Enfield, Waterford, Bristol and Ledyard/Pawcatuck are the other four teams in Avon’s Northern Sectional group that Post 201 could possibly face.

The advantage that Avon has is that they will have their pitching set and rested while their opponent may have played up to three games previously, putting them at a competitive disadvantage.
