A year ago, the Torrington High football team finished with a winning record for the third straight year – something that the Raider program had not accomplished in nearly 30 years. Former coach Bruce Kasenetz led the Raiders to three straight winning seasons from 1982-84. The 2012 Raiders scored over 400 points for the second year in a row.

However, the offseason was a challenging one for the Torrington High football program. Two senior students, who had played their final football game for the Raiders two months earlier, were arrested in February and charged with sexual assault. Reports in most local and national media outlets labeled the students as football players, casting a large shadow over the program.

This fall, the Raiders will try to rebuild their tarnished reputation. On the first day of practice this week, new Torrington High head coach Gaetan Rodriguez wanted to look forward. But he knew he couldn’t escape what has happened the past few months. He spoke with columnist Rick Wilson of Litchfield County Sports on Wednesday.

Gerry deSimas, Jr., is the editor and founder of The Collinsville Press. He is an award-winning writer and has been covering sports in Connecticut and New England for more than 40 years. He was inducted into the New England High School Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2018.
