Bolton girls slip past Canton in OT; Avon easily wins opener

CP basketball graphicCANTON, Dec. 13 – The Bolton High girls basketball team went 15-1 a year ago and shared a the NCCC championship with Avon. A year later, the Bulldogs still know how to win the close ones – but Canton is getting closer. 

Bolton forced the game into overtime and outscored the Warriors by eight to earn a 56-48 decision in the home opener for Canton on Friday night. Canton (1-1, 0-1 NCCC) had a one-point lead, 47-36, with 1:45 left in overtime but couldn’t close the deal. Bolton finished with a 10-1 surge to claim the victory. 

Maggie Treacy led the Warriors with 15 points and three 3-point goals while freshman Emily Briggs chipped in with 12 points. Gabby Rose scored 11 while Erin Detorie added seven. For Bolton, junior guard Marissa Grudauskas led the way with 22 points.

Avon 61, Coventry 37
COVENTRY, Dec. 13 – A 24-5 surge in the second quarter helped Avon win its season opening contest with Coventry Friday night, 61-37. Michaela Marcus scored 14 points to lead the Falcons (1-0, 1-0 NCCC). Anna Schrecengost and Olivia Welter each had 11 points while Madison Mains chipped in with eight points. Kristin Francini led Coventry (0-1, 0-1 NCCC) with 13 points. 

Avon won on opening night for the seventh time in the last eight years. A year ago, Bolton stunned Avon, 52-51 in the season opener.
