Canton boys, Avon girls roll to convincing wins in track

AVON, April 14 – Canton’s Keith Wilson won three individual events while Colin Martin and Dean Yost won two each to lead two-time defending NCCC champion Canton boys track and field team to a 90-60 win over Avon and a 124-25 victory over East Granby Monday afternoon.

Canton (3-0) won 12 of 18 events and captured its 41st consecutive dual meet, dating back to opening day in 2011.

Wilson won the 200 meters and both hurdles events. He was third in the jump. Martin won the 100 and 400 meters and took third in the long jump. Dean Yost won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and ran on Canton’s winning 4×800 meter relay team. Devin Glasson (shot) and William Briggs (discus) also won events for the Warriors. 

Jake Sartain won three events for the Falcons (3-1), taking the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Patrick Howard (pole vault) and Geoff Kirk (javelin) also won individual events for Avon. The Falcons did beat East Granby handily, 119-20.

On the girls side, defending league champion Avon (3-0) remained undefeated with a 119-35 win over Canton and a 111-27 decision over East Granby. The Warriors (1-2) picked up their first win by topping East Granby, 63-42.

Tara Shayler won three events (100, 200, 400 meters) for Avon while Karina Bucci (long jump, triple jump), Carly Regalado (hurdles) and Molly Hamel (1,600, 3,200 meters) each won two events. Jade Yen won the shot put and took third in the discus. Erin Sherman won the javelin and was second in the discus and third in the shot. The Falcons have won 22 consecutive dual meets since April 2012.

Canton’s Hannah Bonini, Taryn Asklof, Lucy Tanner and Alex Martin won the 4×100 relay. Martin took second in the 100 and 400 while Tanner was second in both hurdles races.

Both Canton and Avon were missing athletes due to spring vacation trips.
