CANTON, June 22 – The Canton Crushers are still searching for their first Tri-State League victory. The Winsted Whalers pulled away from the Crushers Sunday at Bowdoin Field with an 11-2 decision. Canton falls to 0-9 in its initial season.

Winsted pitcher Geoff Brisco went eight innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven Canton batters. Drew McCarthy had three singles and scored three runs for the Whalers (3-6) while Ben Schumacher had a single, double and three RBI. 

Canton scored two runs in the ninth inning on a two-run double from Jim Spirito. Joe and Steve Dubois each singled in the inning. Spirito pitched seven innings and took the loss on the mound for the Crushers, striking out two and allowing three earned runs. Spenser Griffin pitched two innings, striking out three for Canton.

The Crushers have a busy week ahead of them. They host Thomaston (1-8) on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Bowdoin Field. The Threshers only win came with a late rally in a 7-6 win over Canton earlier this month.

On Thursday, Canton takes the long drive to Amenia, N.Y., to face the Monarchs (2-5) at Doc Bartlett Field at 7 p.m. On Sunday, they travel to Waterbury to face Tribury (3-5) at Holy Cross High.
