Courant names Grillo as player of the year in girls golf

Avon High’s Marissa Grillo is the Courant’s player of the year in girls golf.

Avon High senior Marissa Grillo was named as player of the year by the Hartford Courant in girls golf for this spring. Grillo was selected as the as the top player from within the 76 high schools across Connecticut that the Courant considers in their primary circulation territory.

Grillo helped Avon win their third straight Southern Connecticut Girls Golf League championship and earned All-State and All-SCGGL honors. Grillo tied for fourth place in at the CIAC championship event and helped Avon finish fourth – its best-ever finish. She will be attending Boston College in the fall.

Farmington’s Matt Chisholm was selected as player of the year by the Courant in boys track and field.

All-Courant selections from the area included:

  • Girls golf: Grillo, Farmington’s Kate Fagan, Simsbury’s Stephanie Rosenberg and Mikayla Sheary
  • Boys golf: Simsbury’s Connor Roche
  • Boys track and field: Chisholm (800, 1,600), Farmington’s Dan Hardiman (discus), Simsbury’s Greg Bombara (javelin)
  • Girls track and field: Farmington’s Devon Michaelis (javelin), Simsbury’s Sarah Mattison (3,200)
  • Girls tennis: Avon’s Hannah Dahlem
  • Boys lacrosse: Simsbury’s Peter Sconzo and Mason Burr
  • Boys tennis: Avon’s John Burdick, Granby’s Chandler Libby, Avon doubles team of Mike Arciero and Mike Thramann
  • Girls lacrosse: Simsbury’s Sutton Wunderele and Joanna Hesketh; Avon’s Paige Hammick, Hannah Davey and Britt Douglas
