AVON – Ten Avon High athletes earned All-State honors this past spring, including five from the girls lacrosse team. Sixty-two athletes from Canton and Avon earned All-NCCC honors.
The Canton High boys track team won a NCCC championship while the Avon High boys tennis, girls tennis, girls track and field and girls lacrosse teams won league championships. The Avon girls golf team won the Southern Connecticut Girls Golf League championship.
Avon High golfer Marissa Grillo earned All-State honors for the fourth consecutive season.
Grillo, who will attend Boston College next fall, tied for fourth at the CIAC girls golf championship with a six-over-par 80. She was a medalist 13 times this spring and qualified for her fourth straight New England tournament. She declined her invitation this year since it was the same day as Avon High’s graduation.
Avon had five players earn All-State honors in girls lacrosse – Hannah Davey, Britt Douglass, Paige Hammick, Sammy Maniatty and Emily Wright.
Douglass had a team-leading 95 goals and had 49 assists in the last 11 games, including two eight assist performances. She’ll play at Furman next spring. Davey scored 94 goals including 14 in four post-season contests. Hammick is a three-year starter in goal and will play at Sacred Heart next spring. Maniatty and Wright, who will play at UMass-Lowell next spring, also earned All-State honors.
Douglass and Hammick earned honorable mention All-American honors as selected by U.S. Lacrosse.
In girls tennis, Avon senior Hannah Dahlem earned All-State honors for the second time by advancing to the semifinals of the State Open tournament. Dahlem lost to eventual State Open champion Kateri Martin of Darien in the semifinals, 6-2, 7-5. Dahlem had played well with four straight wins. She lost just four games in her first three matches. She won the NCCC Tournament at No. 1 singles.
In boys tennis, Avon’s Michael Arciero and Michael Thramann earned All-State honors by advancing to the final in the Class M tournament before losing to top-seeded Luke Lemieux and Matthew Murphy of Guilford. Arciero, a sophomore, and Thramann, a junior, won four straight matches to get to the final including a three-set win over the No. 2 seeded team from Brookfield in the quarterfinal. Arciero and Thramann also won the NCCC Tournament at No. 1 doubles.
Noah Hahn earned All-State honors in baseball after a stellar spring campaign at shortstop and on the mound for the Falcons.
