CANTON, Dec. 27 – The undefeated Canton High girls basketball team limited Granby to just 14 points in the second half to beat the Bears, 47-36, on Saturday night and advance to the championship game of the East Lyme Holiday Tournament.
Canton (5-0, 5-0 NCCC) will face St. Bernard-Uncasville in the championship game on Monday night at East Lyme at 7 p.m. The Saints (3-2) beat East Lyme, 26-24 on Saturday in the other semifinal contest.
The Warriors are playing in their first regular season tournament since 2010 when they won Haddam-Killingworth’s Derita Construction Classic with a 49-45 victory in overtime in the championship against the host Cougars.
Strong defense allowed Canton to pull away from the Bears in the fourth quarter. “With great man-to-man defense, offensive execution, rebounding and making free throws down the stretch, we were able to seal the deal,” Canton coach Brian Medieros said.
Granby scored just seven points in the fourth quarter and Canton’s Maggie Treacy, Emily Briggs and Gabby Rose combined to score 18 for the Warriors. Briggs led Canton with 13 points while Treacy added 12. Rose chipped in with 11 points.
Granby’s Julia Mazzotta scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the second quarter as the Bears (2-3, 2-3 NCCC) rallied to tie the game at halftime, 22-22. Samantha Bates added nine for the Bears, who will face host East Lyme (1-4) in the tournament consolation game on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
TOURNAMENT NOTES: Kaitlyn Berkel and Caitlyn Dittman scored nine points each in St. Bernard’s 26-24 victory over East Lyme. Tied 14-14 at the intermission, St. Bernard shut out East Lyme in the third quarter to take a six-point lead. Theresa Durkee had eight points and four steals for East Lyme and Maggy Powers eight points and eight rebounds. … This is Canton’s fifth appearance in the finals of a regular season tournament. They are 2-2. … Canton’s semifinal game with Granby was played in Canton. The tournament’s championship and consolation games will be in East Lyme.

CANTON, Dec. 27 – In the opening game of a boys and girls doubleheader at the high school on Saturday night, the Warriors gave up just 13 points in the first half in a 52-35 win over winless East Lyme. Cameron Lange led Canton (3-1, 2-1 NCCC) with 14 points while Rieley Hoffman added 12, including a pair of three-point goals. Lange also drained a pair of three-point shots.
