CANTON, Jan. 17 – For just the second time in program history, the Canton High girls basketball has won the first 10 games of the season. The Warriors improved to 10-0 with a dominating 67-36 victory over East Lyme on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Emily Briggs scored a career-high 28 points, including 17 in the second half. She also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. Junior Maggie Treacy added 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Treacy scored 11 points in the second quarter as the Warriors built a 36-18 halftime lead.
“We got off to a pretty good start but East Lyme battled back,” Canton coach Brian Medieros said. “They were a physical, aggressive team on both ends of the court. It was a great team win and effort. We were forced to make some adjustments and the girls executed it nicely.”
Canton (10-0, 9-0 NCCC) remains in first place in the NCCC. Avon (8-2, 8-1 NCCC) is second in the league followed by Windsor Locks (7-3, 6-3 NCCC) and Suffield (6-4, 6-3 NCCC).
The Warriors have three games in the coming week. Canton is at Somers (1-9) on Tuesday night and travels to St. Bernard (5-6) in Montville on Wednesday for the championship game of the East Lyme Tournament. The final was postponed on Dec. 30 after a threatening email from an East Lyme student was discovered on social media.
Canton hosts Suffield on Friday night in Canton.
The Warriors last won 10 games when they had an undefeated regular season (20-0) in 1997-98. Canton won its first 22 games before falling in the NCCC Tournament championship game to E.O. Smith.
