CANTON, Jan. 13 – The Canton High girls basketball team moved into first place in the North Central Connecticut Conference Tuesday night with a 60-24 decision over Coventry.
With their ninth straight win, Canton improves to 9-0 in the league and overall. Bolton (8-1, 7-1 NCCC) handed Avon (7-2, 7-1 NCCC) its first loss in the league with a 46-42 victory.
Maggie Treacy led all scorers with 18 points while Emily Briggs added 12 and pulled down 12 rebounds. Jacquie Grabowski and Gabby Rose chipped in with eight points each. Grabowski had a team-high 13 rebounds. Treacy had nine steals and nine rebounds.
Coventry started out well and built an early 9-2 lead before the Warriors rebounded. “The girls played really well during the final three quarters, running the floor, playing great defense and making the extra pass,” Canton coach Brian Medieros said.
Canton is 9-0 for the first time since 1997-98 when the Warriors finished the regular season undefeated with a 20-0 record. Next, Canton hosts East Lyme on Saturday at 1 p.m.
NOTE: The championship game of the East Lyme Holiday Tournament will be played next week on Wednesday, Jan. 21, when the Warriors travel to Montville to face St. Bernard at 7 p.m. The title game was scheduled to be held on Monday, Dec. 30 but it was postponed when East Lyme officials discovered a threatening post on social media by a student at the school.
