Canton, Avon eliminated in opening round tournament contests

CANTON, March 10 – The scoring droughts were too much for the Canton High boys basketball team in their Class S tournament opener Tuesday night against visiting Cromwell.

The Panthers (12-10) limited Canton to just five points in the fourth quarter and came from behind to earn a 45-36 decision in a Class S first round contest.

Canton (14-9) survived a difficult second quarter when they scored just two points. The Warriors trailed by eight at halftime, 24-16. But with a strong third quarter in which Canton limited Cromwell to just four points, the Warriors took a 31-28 lead after three quarters.

Jake Ayotte led Cromwell with 13 points, including three 3-point field goals. Sean DelValle and Sean Melaven each added 10 points. For Canton, Ben Sullivan led the way with 12 points while NCCC All-Star Cam Daley and Rieley Hoffman each had eight points. 

Windsor 75, Avon 70
AVON, March 10 – Defending Class L champion Windsor opened up a 12-point lead after three quarters and eliminated the Avon High boys basketball team Tuesday night in a Class L first round contest, 75-70. The Falcons finish the season with a 18-6 record but they capture their final NCCC championship a few days earlier with a 48-44 win over Sport Medicine Science Academy.

Tyler Coyle had 21 points lead Windsor (14-11) while Cody Quinn added 15 points. For Avon, Alex Zacchio led the way with 21 points and a pair of three-point goals. Freshman Jordan Williams scored 16 while sophomore Nate Laszewski chipped with 14 points.
