CANTON, April 28 – There are few sports that Canton holds a dominant hand over Avon. Softball is one of those sports. The Warriors beat the Falcons for the 31st time in 39 meetings dating back over 20 years with a 20-5 decision in five innings Tuesday.
Avon (1-7, 0-7 NCCC) is struggling with a young squad. There are freshmen and sophomores throughout the starting lineup and in some games it is very apparent. The Falcons gave up 18 walks in the loss.
But Avon did get four hits with singles from freshman Jillian Haworth, sophomore shortstop Samantha Luby, junior second baseman Alyssa Tripodi and junior outfielder Hannah Lindley. The Falcons were pleased with scoring five runs considering that had scored just one run in its last three contests.
Canton (5-3, 4-2 NCCC) is feeling good with their fourth straight victory. On Monday, Canton dominated Public Safety, a first-year team from Enfield in a 29-5 decision in five innings. On Tuesday against Avon, the Warriors rapped out 10 hits in the victory including a 4-for-4 performance from sophomore Alexa Szczepanski, who had three singles and a double. Winning pitcher Jill Petraitis had a single and triple for Canton. Katie Walker also added a double for the winners.
The two schools are playing their final games in all sports as conference foes this spring with Avon moving to the Central Connecticut Conference in September. The two softball teams meet in the final regular season game on May 26 at Fisher Meadows in Avon.
Canton has captured 11 of the last 12 games between the two schools. The last Avon win came in 2011 when the Falcons beat Canton, 5-4 in eight innings.
Will the two schools play again after this spring? They could if Avon has any open dates on their CCC schedule. Avon’s only win of the season so far was an 11-9 win over Farmington in a non-league contest and the Indians are in the CCC.
