NEWTOWN, May 1 – Several of the distance runners on the Avon High girls track and field team competed at the Yellowjacket Midnight Invitational in Newtown on Friday. The meet isn’t actually held at midnight but during the evening under the lights at Newtown High.

Avon senior Molly Hamel set a new school record in the 5,000 meters, finishing fifth in a time of 18:21.5. The Falcons had six runners in the top 20.

Christina Martin finished 11th with a personal-best time of 19:26.88 followed by her sister Rachel in 19:28.94. Christina won the second heat. Ryley Higgins was 13th with a time of 19:41.95 followed by Sara Leavens (14, 19:52.75) and Kristen Goldie (18, 20:41.81).

Ashley Martin (22, 21:14), Caitlin Cunningham (30, 21:56), Samantha Waddell (40, 24:39) and Danely Fletcher (42, 25:40) also ran for the Falcons in the race.

Canton and Granby compete Friday
GRANBY, May 1 — The Canton High boys track team extended their long winning streak with a 122-22 victory over Stafford and a 113-37 decision over Granby on Friday afternoon. The Warriors (8-0, 8-0 NCCC) have won 59 straight dual meets. On the girls side, Canton (6-2, 6-02 NCCC) beat Stafford but dropped a 77-73 decision to Granby, coming just a few points shy of beating the Bears for the first time.
