CANTON, May 1 – Twice in the 10 days, the Canton High girls lacrosse team won with last-minute goals. On Friday afternoon, it was Somers that picked up the game-winner. Somers’ Danielle Hollister scored the last of her game-high seven goals with 1:19 remaining to lead the Spartans to a 15-14 win over Canton.
On Wednesday, April 22, Canton’s Grace Giancola scored with four seconds left in a 12-11 win over Granby. And on Monday, Giancola scored with 1:19 remaining to lift the Warriors to a 10-9 win over Avon.
On Friday, Somers and Canton engaged in a high-scoring affair. Emma Charron tied her season-high with five goals while Olivia Sullivan had a season-high four goals. Giancola, Canton’s leading scorer with 40 goals, had three goals. Canton goalie Amanda Gottlieb had nine saves in net.
The Somers’ victory tightens up the race for the NCCC championship. Canton (6-3, 5-2 NCCC) and Granby (7-2, 5-2 NCCC) share the lead in the league with Avon (5-4, 4-2 NCCC) right behind followed by Somers (6-3, 4-3 NCCC).
Canton’s remaining conference matches are next Friday at Ellington, May 14 at Suffield and May 19 at home against Granby at 3:45 p.m.
The Warriors hit the road today for another challenging match at Joel Barlow (6-2) in Redding under the lights tonight beginning at 7 p.m.
