With one-goal victories, Avon girls and boys lacrosse teams advance

Lacrosse stickBROOKFIELD, May 30 – Hannah Davey scored seven goals as the No. 19 Avon High girls lacrosse team beat No. 14 Brookfield, 15-14 in overtime in the first round of the Class M tournament on Friday. 

Sammy Maniatty had six goals while Emma Coran had two goals and seven assists to lead the Falcons (9-8) to the victory. Goalie Angela Marinello had 16 saves in net to earn the win. 

Avon advances to the second round where they will face No. 3 Joel Barlow (16-2), which beat New Fairfield, 11-7 for the SWC Division I tournament title last week. The game will be Wednesday in Redding at 5 p.m. 

Brookfield (10-8-1) received five goals from Emily Stoepple and four each from Jillian Fisher and Kaia Gallop. Audrey Powell had a goal while goalie Teja Gallop made eight saves.

Avon 10, Bethel 9
AVON, May 30 – The No. 13 Falcons advanced to the second round of the Class M tournament with an exciting 10-9 victory over No. 20 Bethel at Buckingham Field on Friday afternoon. Avon (10-8) advances and will be play No. 4 Joel Barlow (14-4) on Wednesday in Redding at 5 p.m. With a goal with 38 seconds remaining in overtime, Barlow beat Newtown last week, 12-11 to win the Southwest Conference Division I tournament final.
