NEW BRITAIN, June 1 – It only took two hours of hard, pounding rain to get the CIAC to postpone the Class S championship meet Monday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
But the hearty athletes from the smallest schools in the state managed to complete six events of 18 events and Canton has a 33-26 lead over Bloomfield in the Class S boys championship meet. Hartford’s University High is third with 15½ points.
Competition in the remaining 12 events will resume on Wednesday beginning at noon at Willow Brook Park.
The Warriors have already earned one state championship victory. Canton’s 4×800 relay team of freshman Max Sparks, senior Dean Yost, senior James Yost and senior Augden Shaw turned in a season-best time of 8:21.61 to win the race and a Class S title by nearly four seconds over Litchfield.
It is Canton’s first Class S victory in the 4×800. They finished second in 2013 and 2011.
The Yost brothers finished third and fourth, respectively in the 1,600 meters in a race run in torrential rain. James Yost finished third in 4:38.09 while Dean Yost was fourth in 4:39.39. Maximillian Sparks was 10th in 4:52.44.
Stephen Oliver took fourth in the pole vault with a leap of 11 feet while Cam Daley was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 137 feet, one inch. Canton’s 4×100 relay (Bradley Connolly, Matthew Pickett, John Solomon, Nico Tuccillo) was sixth in 45.85 seconds.
The preliminaries were held in the 110 hurdles and Canton has three of the eight finalists. Dustin Van Kirk is the third seed in 16.5 seconds with Daley as the sixth seed in 16.6 seconds and Solomon seeded eighth with a time of 17.18 seconds.
Canton is looking to win its third Class S championship in the last five years. The Warriors were second in 2014 and 2012 but won the state championship in 2013 and 2011.
On the girls side, Lucy Tanner has been struggling with a foot injury the past few weeks. But she was on the track Monday and took sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.15 seconds.
Canton’s 4×800 relay and 4×100 relay teams each finished fifth. The 4×800 relay (Cameron McCauley, Abigail Briggs, Jocelyn Rossito, Emily Briggs) finished with a time of 10:27 while the 4×100 relay (Emma Skinner, Amber Harraden, Emily Mitchell, Lucy Tanner) finished with a time of 53.09 seconds.
After five events, the Canton girls are fifth with 11 points. Coginchaug leads with 26 points with Immaculate and Old Saybrook tied for second with 21 points.
