Repreive from the rain doesn’t help Avon in Class L loss to Fitch

The season came to an end Wednesday for head coach Jonathan Yolles and the Avon High baseball team after a 6-1 loss to Fitch.

GROTON, June 3 – Two days of rain replenished the Avon High pitching staff.

Sophomore hurler Justin Olson took the mound to start Friday’s NCCC Tournament game against Coventry and he pitched the first three innings as he helped the Falcons grab an eight-run lead. But the Patriots rallied and tied the game. Avon took the lead in the top of the seventh and Olson returned to the mound and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to secure the one-run victory. He ended up pitching four innings and throwing 71 pitches.

Ian McDonald pitched three strong innings in a 10-5 win over Stafford in the first NCCC Tournament game on Friday afternoon. Olson and McDonald probably wouldn’t have pitched much in Avon’s first Class L tournament game scheduled for Monday. But it rained and the game was postponed. Rain on Tuesday postponed the game again.

So, Olson and McDonald were ready to go with four days rest in the first round of the Class L tournament Wednesday against No. 16 Fitch-Groton. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Fitch hurler Hunter Nadeau allowed just five hits and struck out eight as Fitch eliminated No. 17 Avon from the state tournament with a 6-1 victory.

Avon (15-8) had 25 hits in their two NCCC Tournament victories. They managed just five against Fitch with singles from Kyle Emery, Bryant St. Jean, Olson, Sean Delgallo and Matt Boone. Emery had an RBI single in the seventh inning. Jeremy Zarwanski led off the inning with a walk. He was replaced by pinch runner R. Ollstead, who moved to third base on an error.

Fitch (15-8) led 2-0 after four innings. They broke open the game in the fifth and sixth inning. Marceau’s RBI single to left field extended the lead to three runs in the fifth inning. In the sixth, the game continued to unravel.

Fitch’s Kendrick Boss singled and Nadeau was hit by a pitch. After a ground ball out, Greg Cooper reached on an error, scoring a run for a 4-0 lead. Nadeau made it 5-0 on a steal of home and Cooper made it 6-0 by scoring on a wild pitch. Cooper Robinson was 4-for-4 for Fitch while Cooper had two RBI.

Fitch advanced to the second round on Thursday where they were defeated by No. 1 Bristol Eastern, 6-2.
