BURLINGTON, July 16 – The Canton Crushers rapped out 11 hits and scored four times but couldn’t hold back the Burlington Hunters in a 5-4 loss on Thursday night at Lewis Mills.

Pitcher Miguel Sanchez, in his Crusher debut, pitched well, scattering six hits and striking out four. But Burlington erased a two-run deficit with three runs in the fourth inning with key hits from Brady Hecht and Jeff Maytas.

Winless Canton (0-15) took its second lead of the night, 4-3, in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of runs on a two-RBI double from Marc Trotta. But the Hunters (4-10) responded in the fifth and sixth innings on a pair of runs on two hits.

Burlington made a big defensive play in the fifth inning to minimize the Crushers’ rally. Burlington centerfielder Steve Caruso made the long throw to the plate to throw out Jimmy Spirito, who tried to score from second base on a single by Canton’s Jake Bryant.

Canton took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Ben Sullivan singled, Spirito walked and Chris VandeBogart singled to load the bases. Sullivan scored on a wild pitch. The Crushers made it 2-0 in the fourth inning on two-out RBI single from Jon Scippa.

Burlington’s Ty Morin came in the bottom of the seventh and closed out the game for the Hunters, earning the save.

VandeBogart, Bryant, Scippa and catcher Jeff Mulhall each had two hits in the game. Bryant had a double.

Canton plays at Amenia, N.Y. on Sunday for a game with a 1 p.m. start. The Crushers will close out the season with a pair of road games against East Mountain on Wednesday, July 22 at the BAW Complex in Wolcott and a second game on Saturday, August 1 at a site to be announced.
