AMENIA, N.Y., July 19 – Perhaps, this isn’t Canton’s year in the Tri-State League. The Crushers were five outs away from securing their first victory of the season Sunday against the Amenia Monarchs.
Canton led 2-0 with pitcher Jim Spirito on the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning when second baseman Jon Scippa and outfielder Tom Dubois collided in right field going after a fly ball.
Scippa was hurt in the collision and had to leave the game leaving the Crushers with just eight players. Only nine players made the trip to New York leaving Canton one player shy, so Amenia was awarded a 1-0 victory by forfeit.
Tri-State League rules require that teams have nine players on the field to complete a game. Teams can carry up to 25 players on their team rosters, according to league president Eddie Gadomski.
It was a tough ending to a strong effort by the Crushers. Spirito had an outstanding afternoon on the mound. He struck out three and walked just one in 7 1/3 innings of work. He walked just one Amenia batter.
At the plate, Canton took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning on a two-RBI double by Jake Bryant that scored Spirito and Chris VandeBogart. Scippa and Brandon Yancik also had hits for Canton, now 0-17. Amenia improves to 7-9 on the season.
The Crushers return to the field Thursday night when they travel to BAW Complex in Wolcott to face East Mountain at 7:30 p.m.
