Plowboys rally to spoil home finale and hand Crushers their 14th defeat

CANTON, July 12 – In final home game of the season, the Canton Crushers took an early lead but the Bethlehem Plowboys rallied to keep the Crushers winless with an 8-3 decision at Bowdoin Field on a warm, steamy Sunday evening.

Canton (0-14) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a RBI single from Chris VandeBogart and a RBI single from Jon Scippa. But the Plowboys (9-3) rallied with another run in the third to tie it at 2-2 and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning.

Canton pushed a run across in the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3 but Bethlehem pushed across five runs on four hits and a walk in the eighth inning to secure the victory.

VandeBogart was 3-for-4 to lead the Crushers while Jake Bryant was 2-for-3 with a single and a triple. Centerfielder Jim Spirito was 2-for-3 with a double. Scippa had two singles while Marc Trotta and Chris Colon each had singles.

On the mound, Bryant pitched 7 1/3rd innings, striking out three and giving up four earned runs.

On last Thursday, the Crushers fell to 0-13 with a 7-2 loss to Brass City in Waterbury. Spirito had a rough outing on the mound for Canton, giving up six runs, nine singles and walking five in three innings of work. Justin Mulchay came on in relief and struck out and allowed an additional run.

Canton had just four hits in the game. Andre Eason, Jr., Ben Sullivan, Jeff Mulhall and Andre Eason, Sr., each had hits for the Crushers. Andre Eason, Jr. had a double. Brass City improves to 5-5.

The Crushers close out the season on the road but still has one local contest. Canton travels to Burlington on Thursday night to face the Burlington Hunters (3-10) at Lewis Mills beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Canton travels to Amenia, N.Y., on Sunday, June 19 for a contest with the Monarchs, travels to the BAW Complex in Wolcott to face East Mountain on Wednesday, July 22 and closes out the 2015 campaign with a game against East Mountain on Saturday, August 1 at a site to be announced.
