WOLCOTT, July 22 – Starting pitcher Miguel Sanchez struck out nine and scattered three hits to help the Canton Crushers earn their first victory of the season with a 4-1 Tri-State League win over the East Mountain Cougars at the BAW Complex Wednesday night.
Not only did Canton snap a 20-game losing streak dating back to last season but the Crushers left the field feeling good after a tough loss by forfeit to Amenia on Sunday. Canton was leading 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning when second baseman Jon Scippa was hurt in a collision with teammate Tom Dubois. Scippa couldn’t finish the game and with just eight players, Canton had to forfeit.
“We talked about it before the game that we wanted to win it for Scippa,” said Dubois, who is also the team manager. “This was nice after Sunday. This was definitely a morale booster, definitely a good pick up.”
Canton (1-16) had only two hits in the game but they made them count. Jake Bryant led off the third inning with a double off East Mountain starter Anthony Moura. Bryant moved to third on a passed ball. Two batters later, Bryant gave Canton a 1-0 lead, scoring on a sacrifice fly to center field by Marc Trotta. It was the third consecutive game that Bryant ripped a double.
In the sixth inning and tied at 1-1, the Crushers took advantage of some wildness by Moura.
Canton’s Andre Eason reached on an error and moved to second base on a ground ball out. But Moura lost control. Steve Dubois and Bryant walked to load the bases. VandeBogart’s walk drove in Eason. Steve Dubois scored on a passed ball for a 3-1 lead. Canton’s Manny Sanchez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bryant scored for a 4-1 lead when Trotta was hit by a pitch.
In the top of the seventh inning, Miguel Sanchez struck out the side to secure the win for the Crushers.
Defensively, Canton didn’t commit an error. Andre Eason had Canton’s other hit – a single in the third inning.
Canton closes out the 2015 season against the Cougars on either August 1 or August 2 at a site and time to be determined.
