AVON, Aug. 19 – She may be a 17-year-old amateur from Massachusetts but Megan Khang played like a professional in carving up the Golf Club of Avon course to win her third Connecticut Women’s Open championship Wednesday. Khang had 16 birdies and an eagle in the two-day event, winning by eight strokes over professional Ashlan Ramsey of Greenville, South Carolina.
Khang won with rounds of 65 and 64 on the par-72 course for a tournament record score of 129 (-15). That shattered by nine shots the previous Connecticut Women’s Open tournament record of 138, previously held by Suzy Whaley (2002) and Natalie Shaeary (2010).
Khang’s day two score of 64 also set a competitive course record at the Golf Club of Avon, which was hosting this Connecticut State Golf Association (CSGA) event for the first time. Ramsey was second with a 138 after rounds of 71 and 67. Bloomfield amateur Nathalie Filler carried the banner for Connecticut by finishing tied for fourth with a two-day total of 142 and a strong second day score of three-under-par 69.
Avon’s Autumn Serruta was the top golfer among five local athletes in the tournament. Serruta finished tied for 43rd with a two-day total of 163. She shot a 79 on day one and an 84 on Wednesday.
The course played tough. Only five of the 70 players in the tournament finished under par. Ramsey made a slight run at Khang on the second day but Khang finished with a flourish. On the final 10 holes of the tournament, she had six birdies and an eagle. She had a 29 on the final nine holes of the tournament.
“Winning here is such an honor, especially since I wasn’t able to defend last year,” Khang told USGA intern Katie Vrabel. “Coming here and competing against such great players like Ashlan Ramsey meant I had to make sure to stay in my own game.” Khang was the youngest winner in tournament history in 2011 at the age of 14 and won it again in 2012.
Serruta, who finished 11th at the Connecticut State Women’s Amateur a week ago, had two birdies in the tournament. Burlington’s Nicole Elliott was 45th with a two-day total of 165, shooting 82 on Tuesday and 83 on Wednesday. She had nine pars on each day.
Canton’s Nikki Liucci, Avon’s Donna Harris and Avon’s Marissa Grillo were among several players finishing with a two-day total of 166 and tied for 48th place. Liucci was consistent with rounds of 84 and 82. She had three double bogeys on day 1 but none on day two. Harris shot an 82 Tuesday and an 84 on Wednesday with two birdies in the tournament.
Grillo shot a 77 on day one with a birdie and 12 pars. But she stumbled on day two with an 89 with three tough holes in the back nine.
