Avon girls cross country wins championship trophies on back-to-back days

The Avon High girls cross country team, with coach Al Dadario, shown earlier this year at Windham, won their second invitational in two days Saturday at the Hale-Ray Invitational.

MOODUS, Oct. 3 – Back-to-back meets didn’t bother the Avon High girls cross country team. The Falcons won the Nonnewaug Invitational for the third time in four years Friday in the rain. On Saturday under clear skies and cool temperatures, Avon was red hot.

No. 8 Avon had all seven of their varsity runners among the top 11 runners at the Hale-Ray Invitational rolled to an easy 20-79 win over Lyman Memorial. Sophomore Rachel Martin won the 3.1-mile race in 20:21.05, handily beating Hannah Kaplan of Lyman Memorial by 30 seconds.

Avon’s Sara Leavens was third in 21:13, followed by teammate Ryley Higgins in fourth (21:18) and Christina Martin in fifth place (21:24). Ashley Martin took seventh (21:44), Gabriella Colletti (22:14) was eighth and Caroline Luby (22:34) finished in 11th place.

Avon’s Alex Benedict won the girls junior varsity race in 23:15. The Falcons (3-0, 3-0 CCC Central White) are ranked No. 8 in the latest state coaches poll. The Avon boys did not racce on Saturday.
