BREWSTER, N.Y. —  It’s been a long time since the Canton High girls cross country team brought home a championship trophy from an invitational event.

How long? That’s a good question. Canton won the Northwest Conference meet in 1976 and 1977. They finished second twice at the Stratton Brook Invitational in the early 2000s.

It’s really water under the bridge because the Canton girls came home Saturday from the 38th Brewster Bear Classic with a championship trophy. Canton outlasted Carmel, N.Y., 55-59 to win the Division I race at the event that featured primarily New York State schools.

Canton had five runners in the top 25 to earn the victory. Emily Briggs was eighth with a time of 20:01 over the 3.1 mile course with her sister Abby in ninth place in 20:14. The key to victory was strong running from Belle Magna (18, 20:35), Cameron McCauley (21, 20:43), Jocelyn Rossitto (22, 20:52) and Helena Winkler (28, 21:26).

Carmel’s Sessions Jade finished second and teammate Jilian Aiello was seventh but then there was a big gap. Teammate Emma McSherry was 16th while Kayla Sexton was 26th. And Winkler finished two spots ahead of Carmel’s fifth runner, giving Carmel another two points on their score.

The Canton boys also ran in the race and finished sixth, led by Jake Whittingslow, who was 11th in 16:48.7.
