Beretta, Currier are top local finishers at Hartford Marathon

HARTFORD, Oct. 10 – Avon’s Nicola Beretta, 39, was the top local finisher in Saturday’s Hartford Marathon at Bushnell Park. Beretta finished 38th in the field with a time of 2:50.55 seconds. Jonas Hampton, a former University of Hartford runner who graduated in 2009, became the first man who lives in Connecticut (New Britain) to win the race in 2:15.58. He beat last year’s winner Chris Pelltier by two minutes.

The top area woman was Burlington’s Mary Lynn Currier, 51, who was the top woman from Connecticut in the marathon. Currier finished 10th among the women and 57th overall in the field with her time of 2:57.29. She was also the top woman in the Master’s Division. Erica Jessman of Scarborough, Maine, won the women’s race for a record fourth time in 2:41.41. Jessman won by over four minutes.

In the half marathon (13.1 miles), Farmington’s Jon Krell, 24, was the top area finisher, taking 12th place in 1:11.39. The top area woman in the race was Farmington’s Megan Papp, 24, who was 90th in 1:28.21. Harbert Okuti won the men’s half marathon for the second straight year in 1:05.32. Sarah Hutchings of Boulder, Colorado was the top woman in 1:17.09

The top area finishers in the 5K race (3.1 miles) were Granby’s Jake Koteen, 35, who was 18th in 18:45 and Granby’s Kathy Lundin, 57, who was 67th in 21:46. The winner of the 5K was Brian Biekert of North Stonington in a blistering 15:01 while Maggie Callahan of Boulder, Colorado won the women’s race in 17:26.
