Giancola helps Canton blank Westbrook; Surging Avon nearly back in the top 10

CANTON, Oct. 7 – Grace Giancola scored off a corner hit with 20:39 remaining in the second half to snap a scoreless tie and lift the Canton High field hockey team to a 2-0 non-conference win over Westbrook Wednesday on the turf at CHS.

Giancola has scored four goals in the last three games, including a pair in Monday’s 2-1 win over Suffield. She has a team-leading seven goals on the season.

Kaelyn Oliver scored her first goal of the season in the second half to add some needed insurance for the Warriors while goalie Natalie Nardello made seven saves in net to pitch her second shutout of the season.

Canton’s three-game winning came to an end on Thursday when the Warriors (6-1-2, 5-1-1 NCCC) battled to a 1-1 overtime tie on the road at Stafford. Erica Nedderman had the goal for Canton. Nardello made nine saves in goal. Ashley Robbins scored for Stafford (2-5-3).

Surging Avon nearly in top 10 poll
AVON, Oct. 6 – After opening the season with a 4-0 loss to Glastonbury, the Avon field hockey team has won seven straight games. It has nearly landed the Falcons back in the state’s top 10 field hockey coaches poll.

In the latest top 10 poll, Avon (7-1, 3-1 CCC South) is ranked No. 11 with 28 votes, one vote behind No. 10 Lauralton Hall. Undefeated Glastonbury (6-0, 4-0 CCC South) is ranked No. 2 in the state.

Since losing to Glastonbury on Sept. 11, Avon has just given up one goal in seven games – -a 2-1 win over Simsbury. The Falcons have shut out Wethersfield, Fermi, Southington, Newington, Hall and South Windsor.

Avon beat Hall, 3-0, on Tuesday with individual goals from Hannah Deppe, Molly Sanderson and Annie Kuo. Deepe leads the team with five goals while Sanderson and Kuo have scored three goals each.

On Thursday, Avon handed No. 12 South Windsor (7-1-1) its first loss of the season with a 1-0 victory on a goal by Lauren Jennell. Goalie Emily Foley made six saves in net to earn the shutout.

The Falcons return to action Tuesday when they host Windsor (4-3-1) at 3:45 p.m. at the high school.
