OLD LYME, Nov. 14 – Old Lyme’s Will Ferguson scored three goals including a big goal just 1:44 before halftime to help lift No. 3 Old Lyme to a 6-1 win over No. 6 Canton in the quarterfinals of the Class S boys soccer tournament Saturday.
Ferguson gave the Wildcats (17-1-3) a one-goal lead, scoring with about four minutes gone in the game. He extended the lead to two goals by scoring with 1:44 remaining in the first half.
Nate Peduzzi scored the first of his two goals with 10:32 gone in the second half to give the host Wildcats a 3-0 lead. Three minutes later, Ferguson scored on a penalty kick to make it 4-0. Peduzzi and Jacob Olson also scored for Old Lyme.
Canton (13-5-1) was led by Colin Madigan, who scored with 7:08 left in the contest. It’s the fifth time that the Wildcats have eliminated the Warriors from the Class S tournament but the first time since 1978.
Old Lyme advances to face Coventry in the Class S semifinals on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. in Montville.
