CANTON – It’s been a good year for Canton’s Kevin Giancola.
He has the opportunity to spend many spring and fall afternoons watching his daughter, junior Grace Giancola, work her magic on the field with the Canton High girls lacrosse and field hockey program. Grace helped both teams qualify for the CIAC Class S state tournament and had two game-winning goals for the field hockey program this fall. In girls lacrosse, she had two game-winning goals in the final minute.
Kevin Giancola had had some athletic triumphs of his own, too. In August, he won the Connecticut PGA Championship for the fifth time and first time since 2011. He overcame a two-stroke deficit on the final two holes to beat defending champion Adam Rainaud by one shot.
“It’s just really, really special,” said Kevin Giancola after winning the Connecticut PGA tournament in August. “Winning our Section championship is a big win overall, but to do it a fifth time, I can’t believe it. I can’t tell you what it means, at this point it’s indescribable. I’ve never cared much about records or trophies, they just happen because of good play, so I never thought about them I just focused on playing well. But to have won this event again means a lot, especially against this group in the field.”
He also relishes the opportunity to teach the game. Kevin is the PGA professional at the Golf Quest Family Sports Center in Southington. “I love teaching,” he told Ken Lipshez of the Meriden Record Journal. “I have a huge passion for it. I truly care if my students get better and I really work hard at it. I try to improve them so they’ll enjoy golf more. Growing the game of golf is my job.” Click on the following link to read Ken’s recent profile on Kevin in the Record Journal.
Kevin previously won the Connecticut PGA championship in 2003, 2008, 2010 and 2011. In his career, he has played in 16 PGA Tour events including the 1993 U.S. Open. The record for most Connecticut PGA championship wins is eight by Dennis Coscina.
