HARTFORD, Jan. 9 – Avon may have left the North Central Connecticut Conference but there is no problem with competing with old friends. The Falcons participated in the non-scoring NCCC Invitational indoor track and field meet at Hartford Public on Saturday.
Like many meets in the indoor track and field season, there was no team scoring. It is an opportunity to let athletes compete and prepare for the league championship and state championship meets. Avon will compete in its first Central Connecticut Conference championship meet on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Floyd Little Field House at Hillhouse High.
Canton will compete in the NCCC championship meet in New Haven on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
Both schools participated in the NCCC Invitational. Avon had three individual winners with Christine Oberhausen winning the 300 meter and 600 meter run and Rachel Martin taking the 1,600 meters. Andrew Suter won the 3,200 meters.
Canton’s John Solonmon (high jump) and Will Briggs (shot) each won their events with the girls 1,600 meter sprint relay team also winning their respective event.
Oberhausen beat Canton’s Abby Briggs by nearly three seconds to win the 600 meters in 1:46.67. In the 300, Oberhausen beat Granby’s Cassandra Miller by 0.58 of a second with her winning time of 45.16 seconds. Martin (5:49.73) won by nearly three seconds in the 1,600 while Suter (10:24.64) won by more than three seconds in the 3,200.
Solomon and Mike Marion of Suffield both jumped 5-foot-6 but Solomon finished first with fewer misses. Briggs won with his throw of 43 feet, nine inches. In the 1,600 meter sprint medley relay, Canton’s team of Lucy Tanner, Emily Mitchell, Amber Harraden and Abby Briggs won in 4:46.86, nearly 10 seconds ahead of Windsor Locks.
Several athletes finished in the top 10 of their respective events. Most events had over 20 competitors while some sprinting events had over 60 athletes in the events.
