STAFFORD, Jan. 13 – The Canton High girls basketball team has been tested in three out-of-conference games against Notre Dame-Fairfield, New Fairfield and West Hartford’s Hall High. Now, they’ll get the first real test in the North Central Connecticut Conference when they face undefeated Enfield on Friday night in Canton.
The game will be televised across the state on CPTV Sports and will be the first-ever basketball broadcast from the Canton High hardwood. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Canton (8-2, 7-0 NCCC) took care of business Wednesday with an easy 51-31 win over Stafford. The Warriors led 34-4 at halftime. Emily Briggs led all scorers with 18 points while Maggie Treacy added 14 points, including four 3-point goals for Canton. The Bulldogs didn’t sink a free throw, going 0-for-3 from the charity stripe.
Enfield (9-0, 6-0 NCCC) is ranked No. 15 in the latest New Haven Register coaches poll and is led by three sophomores – Mary Baskerville, the team’s leading scorer (15.6 points per game) and rebounded (7.3 caroms per game), Danielle Delano (13.7 ppg, 2.5 rpg) and Caternia Fonseca (10.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg).
Canton and Enfield are the last two teams undefeated in league play. Bolton is 6-1 in the league while Suffield is 4-1.
Canton, which shared the NCCC title with Avon last year, is receiving votes in the state coaches poll and comes in at No. 22. The Warriors lost to New Fairfield by 20 points in December, beat Hall in the championship game of the Simsbury Bank Canton Holiday Classic and dropped an eight-point decision to Notre Dame-Fairfield on Jan. 2. The Warriors haven’t lost since, winning two straight.
