CANTON, Jan. 5 – After a humbling loss on Saturday, the Canton High girls basketball team is back on the winning track after a 71-51 NCCC victory over Coventry on Tuesday night. Maggie Treacy had a game-high 28 points with 14 rebounds and nine assists to lead the Warriors while Emily Briggs added 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
“We’re still looking to put a complete game together but I think we’re getting closer to that,” Canton coach Brian Medeiros said. “It was great to see contributions from multiple girls. Hopefully, this can continue as we have another solid opponent on Friday night (Windsor Locks).”
Canton (6-2, 5-0 NCCC) came into the game off a 50-42 loss to Notre Dame-Fairfield on Saturday night. Emily Briggs led the Warriors with 17 points while Treacy had 15.
“We played a big, physical team and the girls did a great job battling for three of the four quarters,” Medeiros said. “In the third quarter, we were outplayed and outscored 16-4. The girls answered with a great fourth quarter where we cut the lead from 16 to four points with the ball with under 2:30 to go.”
But the Warriors couldn’t finish the comeback. Treacy scored 10 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter. She also had six steals and five assists in the game.
“This was another opportunity for us to step out of our conference play and compete with one of the better teams in the state,” Medeiros said. Canton beat Notre Dame-Fairfield in the Class S semifinals a year ago. “We matched their physicality and intensity for the majority of the game,” he said. “If a game like this doesn’t prepare us for the top teams in the NCCC nothing will. Obviously, we wanted to win but we felt pretty good about ourselves none the less.”
On Tuesday night, the competition from the Patriots wasn’t as fierce but Coventry made the Warriors work for the victory. Canton raced out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter but lost its focus and began making too many unforced turnovers. The Patriots outscored Canton, 22-13 in the second quarter to take a one point lead at halftime, 27-26.
“We made some minor adjustments and the girls completely took over the second half,” Medeiros said. “Several girls stepped up and played well. Emma Charron did a great job offensively and defensively as did Sarah Bowman who had three blocked shots. Amanda Gottlieb returned to action after missing the first seven games due to a concussion and did a very good job in her debut. Belle Magna played her best half of basketball as she led us with eight points.”
