Four Avon athletes finish in top 10 at CCC championship meet

Track logo DSC_1740NEW HAVEN, Jan. 30 – The Avon High indoor track and field teams made their debut at the Central Connecticut Conference tournament Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center. And the competition is fierce.

A year ago, Bloomfield won the Class S girls title, Glastonbury won the Class LL girls title and Tolland captured the Class M and State Open championships. Among the boys, Bloomfield won a Class S title and Windsor grabbed the Class L crown.

It was just as competitive Saturday. In the girls competition, Bloomfield edged Tolland, 98-92 to win the CCC championship while in the boys competition, Glastonbury was the big winner with Wethersfield a distant second, 114½ to 67.

Avon had four runners finish in the top 10 of their respective events as the Falcon boys and girls teams each finished 25th in the field of 31 teams.

Christine Oberhausen had the best finish for Avon with an eighth place finish in the 600 meters in 1:42.95. Andrew Suter also finished eighth for the Falcons in the 3,200 with a time of 10:21.05.

Suter took ninth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:39.52 while teammate Zach Bortoff was tenth in the 1,000 meters in 2:47.96.

Rachel Martin finished 12th in the 1600 meters in 1:42.95 while Ashley Martin was 13th in the 1,000 meters in 3:21.33. Jack Stokesbury took 13th in the 1,000 meters with his time of 2:57.31.

Two Avon relays finished in the top 15. The girls 4×200 relay (Gina Lindley, Jennifer Koo, Oberhausen, Shilpa Donde) was 13th with a time of 1:53.55 while the girls sprint medley relay team (Lindley, Donde, Christina Martin, Ashley Martin) was 15th with a time of 4:54.96.

The Avon boys will compete in the CIAC Class M championships on Saturday, Feb. 13 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven while the Avon girls will be in the Class L championships on Friday, Feb. 12 in New Haven.
