Avon High senior Brahm Bulow set a new school record in the 5,000 meters at the Nike Indoor track and field national championship meet in Boston on March 13.
Bulow had a record time of 15:02.98 to finish fourth in the Emerging Elite race.
In February at the State Open championships in New Haven, Bulow finished tenth in the 3,200 meters with a time of 9:44.06 while Lauren Edge finished tenth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.03 meters.
Logan Murray was eleventh in the 55 meters with a personal best time of 8.11 seconds while Chris Campbell took 12th in the 3,200 meters with a time of 9:50.39. Abby Van Hoof also finished 12th in the 1,000 meters in 3:07.25.
Avon’s 4×800 relay team of Bulow, Campbell, Riley Klotz and Andrew Kessler finished ninth with a school record time of 8:22.89, erasing nearly six seconds of their time from the Class M championship meet.
The Falcons didn’t score any points in the State Open.
At the Class M championship meet, the Avon boys finished fifth while the Falcon girls finished eleventh.
In the boys meet, East Lyme won the Class M championship with 70 points, easily beating Lyman Hall, who was second with 49.67 points. Hand was third with 36, followed by Sheehan with 24 and Avon with 25.
Avon had two of the top three runners in the 3,200 meters with Bulow finishing second with a time of 9:50.96 and Campbell taking third in 9:51.59. Griswold’s Tycen LaBelle easily won the race and the state title with a time of 9:28.56.
Kessler finished fourth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:46.73 while Murray was sixth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.21 seconds. Murray tied the school record in the pole vault with a leap of 10-foot-6, good enough for 20th place.
The boys’ 4x800m relay team of Bulow, Campbell, Klotz and Kessler finished third with a time of 8:28.74 to earn a spot at the State Open.
In the girls competition, Mercy beat Woodstock Academy, 66-42 to win the Class M championship. Avon was eleventh with 17 points, just two points shy of Hand, who rounded out the top 10 with 19 points.
Leading the Falcons was Lauren Edge, who finished second with a personal-best time of 8.91 seconds in the 55 hurdles. Woodstock’s Emma Weitknecht won the race with a time of 8.33 seconds.
Another top 10 finish came from Abby Van Hoof, who was sixth in the 1,000 meters with a personal-best time of 3:06.50.
The girls sprint medley relay (Isabella Errico, Lauren Edge, Kathryn Martin, and Abby Van Hoof) finished fourth with a season-best time of 4:26.48 while the 4×400 meter relay team (Elin Carboni, Megan Van Hoof, Lauren Edge, and Kathryn Martin) also finished fourth with a another season-best time of 4:20.68.
Both teams qualified for the State Open but illnesses to some runners forced coaches to substitute for other runners and the two teams didn’t place at the Open.
At the CCC championship meet in late January, Campbell won a Central Connecticut Conference championship with his time of 9:48.31, beating E.O. Smith’s Alex Cook, who ran a personal-best time of 9:50.79. Bulow did not run in the race.
Murray finished eighth in the 55 meter hurdles and pole value while the boys 4×800 team (Leo Rasy, Chris Campbell, Riley Klotz, Andrew Keller) finished second in 8:36.25 to earn All-Conference honors behind Glastonbury, who won the race with a time 8:33.52.
The boys finished 12th in the CCC overall with 18 points and fifth in the CCC Central Division with 47 points.
For the Avon girls, Edge was eighth in the 55 hurdles while Van Hoof took sixth in the 1,000 meters. The girls sprint medley relay (Errico, Edge, Martin, Van Hoof) finished fourth.
The Avon girls were 15th overall in the CCC with six points and eighth of 10 teams in CCC Central with 23 points.
