Seven Avon athletes earn All-State honors; other athletes earn additional recognition

CP canterbury a, graphicAVON – Seven Avon High athletes received All-State honors for their play this fall for the Falcons and more were recognized with All-Central Connecticut Conference honors.

Teddy Allmendinger (football), Abby Laszewski (volleyball), Jack Keenan (soccer), Ryley Higgins (cross country), Hannah Deppe (field hockey) and Lauren Jeandell (field hockey) earned All-State honors.

Allmendinger, a senior linebacker with a team-leading 145 tackles, was named to the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s Class L All-State team and to the Walter Camp Foundation’s All-Connecticut team. The Walter Camp team consists of just 22 players from around the state. He hopes to play football next year at UConn.

Laszewski, a senior outside hitter, earned Class L All-State honors in volleyball. She led the Falcons with a career-high 298 kills. She was second on the team in aces with 57 and third in total blocks with 14, despite missing the first quarter of the season recovering from a foot injury. She was also selected a CHSCA Senior All-Star (named team MVP) and received CCC All-Academic Team honors. She will attend Wisconsin next fall on a basketball scholarship.

Keenan, a senior striker, scored a team-leading 21 goals including six in the state tournament to help the Falcons win a Class L state championship and a share of the CCC Central White title with Farmington. Keenan scored twice in quarterfinal, semifinal and championship game victories as Avon won its first outright state championship since 2000 with a 3-1 win over Wethersfield.

Higgins earned All-State honors and helped Avon win their third Class MM title in the last four years by winning the Class MM championship race – the first race she has won in her career. Avon beat RHAM, 62-73 to claim the state championship. Higgins was the fourth Avon runner to win a state title and the first since Rachael Rosow in 2011.

In field hockey, Avon had two players earn All-State honors – Hannah Deppe and Lauren Jeandell as the Falcons advanced to the Class M semifinals for the fourth consecutive year before falling to Joel Barlow. Deppe led the team with 10 goals while Jeandell added four.

Several Avon athletes earned All-Courant honors, too. The Hartford Courant selects the best athletes in each respective sport from the 82 schools they consider in their primary circulation area.
