Canton senior Maggie Treacy and the Warriors won for the third straight time Tuesday in the Class S tournament.
CANTON, March 8 – In the final home game of the season for the Canton High girls basketball team, the Warriors dominated St. Bernard, 55-27 to advance to the Class S semifinals for the second straight season. No. 3 Canton forced 13 turnovers in the first period as they raced out to an 18-0 lead.
The Warriors will face their first real test of the tournament next Monday when they take on No. 2 Bolton in the semifinals at East Catholic High in Manchester at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs have swept two games with Canton this season, including a 55-48 overtime win in the NCCC Tournament.
No. 22 St. Bernard (11-13) was no match for the Warriors (20-6), who won their first three games of the state tournament by 35 (Wolcott Tech), 20 (Windham High) and 28 points, respectively. The Saints turned the ball over 29 times with numerous turnovers caused by Canton’s defensive pressure.
“We came out firing last night,” Canton coach Brian Medeiros said. “Our defensive intensity was the key to the run as we forced many first quarter turnovers to jump out to an 18-0 lead. Abbe Skinner did a tremendous job of denying their star player Caitlyn Dittman, as she managed only 7 first half points.
“The girls played with great energy and poise,” Medeiros said. “It was very nice to see the girls execute. We will need to continue to do that as we move forward in this tournament.”
Emily Briggs tied her season high with 29 points while Maggie Treacy had 13 points, 12 steals and 10 assists. Briggs pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds and had eight steals. Emma Charron tied her season-high with 13 points. She also 13 points in the 35-point victory over Wolcott Tech.
