AVON, April 15 – Avon High catcher Jeremy Zarwanski hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Falcons to a 5-3 win over No. 6 Southington Friday afternoon in Central Connecticut Conference play at Buckingham Field.
Avon hurler Justin Olson picked up his first win of the season, going six innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven. The Falcons remained undefeated (3-0, 1-0 CCC Central White) while it was the first loss of the season for the Blue Knights (3-1, 2-0 CCC Central Blue), a Class LL school and the sixth largest school in the state.
Avon scored their first two runs in the first and third inning thanks to Southington errors. The Falcons snapped a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning. Zarwanski, 2-for-3, two RBI, singled to left field and advanced to third base on an error by the left fielder. Zarwanski scored on Ian McDonald’s ground ball to shortstop.
Leading 3-2 in the sixth, Olson reached on a single and scored on Zarwanski’s two-run home run to extend the lead to three runs, 5-2. Avon’s Connor Harris struck out two to earn the save in the seventh inning.
The Falcons return to the field Saturday when they host Windsor (1-0, 0-0 CCC Central White) at 3 p.m. at Buckingham Field.
