Avon, Canton come up short in one-run losses

Baseball ImageBRISTOL, May 10 – The Avon High baseball team had 11 hits and several chances to score but couldn’t push across the key run in a 4-3 Central Connecticut Conference loss to Bristol Central Tuesday, snapping a five-game winning streak for the Falcons.

With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Bristol Central second baseman Matt Hetteron threw out Avon’s Sean Del Gallo at home to end the game. With the bases loaded, Del Gallo was trying to tie up the game on a ground ball from teammate Chris Jacobs to Hetteron.

Bristol Central’s defense stood tall in the fifth inning, too. Avon had runners on first and third base with one out when Del Gallo was picked off third base to dampen the rally. Bristol Central pitcher Brock Clark pitched 5 2/3 innings, scattering nine hits and striking out eight to earn the win.

Central led 2-0 after two innings but Avon tied the game in the third inning on a RBI single from Justin Olson and a RBI single from Jeremy Zarwanski. They added a second run in the fourth inning on a RBI single from Andrew LeDuc.

Zarwanski was 3-for-4 with one RBI for Avon while Del Gallo was 2-for-4 with a double and LeDuc was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Kyle Emery pitched six solid innings for the Falcons, allowing just four hits and striking out three.

Avon returns to the field on Wednesday with another road game at Windsor. The Falcons host Hall on Friday.
