
Ian McDonald hit a home run on the second pitch of Avon’s 7-2 Class L victory over New London Tuesday.
NEW LONDON, May 31 – Senior Ian McDonald hit a first inning home run and had three hits to lead the No. 23 Avon High baseball team to a 7-2 win over No. 10 New London in a first round Class L tournament game Tuesday.
Avon (11-10) led 3-0 after three innings and 6-1 after five innings to snap a five-game losing streak with the victory. Avon hurlers Justin Olson and Will Boone limited the Whalers (14-9) to just four hits. Olson improved to 5-1 on the year, allowing one hit over five innings and striking out three.
The Falcons advance to the second round on Wednesday when they travel to Monroe to face No. 7 Masuk (16-7). McDonald finished with three hits, including a double for Avon while Andrew LeDuc and Kyle Emery each had two hits. Catcher Jeremy Zarwanski had a double and three RBI.
On the second pitch of the game, McDonald hit a home run to give Avon a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, McDonald led off the inning with a single to left field and stole second base. He moved to third base on a ground ball out.
After Sean Del Gallo was hit by a pitch and stole second base, Zarwanski’s sacrifice fly scored McDonald for a 2-0 lead. Del Gallo scored on a LeDuc’s RBI single to center field for a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Avon extended its lead to four runs when Zarwanski drove in two runs with a two-RBI double to left field. Kyle Emery’s RBI single made it 6-1. Emery drove in Avon’s seventh run in the seventh on a RBI single to center field.
Avon had lost seven of their last eight games including four games by one run.
