
Avon’s Kyle Emery pitched more than three innings of solid relief to help No. 23 Avon advance in the Class L tournament Wednesday.
MONROE, June 1 – The Avon High baseball team is taking advantage of their opportunities and the season is continuing for the Falcons.
No. 23 Avon scored three times in the third inning on wild pitches and received outstanding relief pitching from Kyle Emery and Justin Olson to beat No. 7 Masuk- Monroe in the second round of the Class L tournament Wednesday, 8-6.
Avon (12-10), which lost five straight to close out the regular season, now gets a home game for Saturday’s Class L quarterfinal at Buckingham Field at 3 p.m. against No. 31 North Haven. The Indians (10-12) are the defending Class L champions and have beaten No. 2 Berlin, 5-3 in eight innings and No. 15 Fitch, 7-6, in the state tournament.
The Falcons trailed Masuk by three runs after two innings but scored four times in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Three runs scored on wild pitches from Masuk reliever Nick Lorusso and a sacrifice fly from Avon’s Matt Rose.
Avon extended its lead in the fifth inning. With one out, Ian McDonald singled to right field and moved to third on Olson’s double to left field. Both scored on a two-RBI single to center from Sean Del Gallo for a 7-4 lead.
Masuk cut the lead to one on a two-RBI double from Joe Porcelli in the fourth inning, 7-6. But in the final three innings, Masuk put only two runners on base thanks to an error and a single. Emery, now 2-3, completed 3 2/3 innings of excellent relief in the fifth inning and Olson allowed just one hit in the final two innings.
Del Gallo led Avon at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and two RBI. Olson was 2-for-3 with a double at the plate for the Falcons. Porcelli was 3-for-3 with two RBI for Masuk.
