WEST HARTFORD, May 14 – Ian McDonald hit a grand slam and Sean Del Gallo added a two-run home run as the Avon High baseball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 6-4 Central Connecticut Conference win over Hall High on Saturday afternoon.
McDonald also pitched three innings on the mound, allowing no runs and three hits to pick up his first victory of the season. He struck out two batters.
Avon (10-5) took a 4-1 lead in the second inning. Thanks to three walks and a ground out, the bases were loaded with two outs for McDonald, who belted a line drive over the left field fence for a grand slam home run.
Hall (6-8) tied the game at 4-4 with three runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a wild pitch from Avon starter Connor Harris and a pair of RBI singles from Charles Lange and Omar Montalavo.
The Falcons regained the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning when Del Gallo smacked a two-out home run over the left field fence to give Avon a 6-4 lead. Del Gallo finished the day going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
McDonald and reliever Kyle Emery pitched four innings of shutout ball to secure the win. Emery earned his first save of the year. McDonald finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI.
Avon returns to the field on Monday night when they travel to No. 8 Southington (9-5) for a 7 p.m. start under the lights at Fontana Field.
